Measuring and managing the genetic risk of disease: New methods to combine information across thousands of DNA markers to form better genetic predictions

Most diseases are partly heritable and knowledge of the genes that affect risk has exploded in the last few years. The related fields of genetic epidemiology and statistical genetics are fast moving, high profile and offer excellent career opportunities. Soon it will be possible to take an individual’s DNA sequence and accurately measure their genetic risk of disorders such as heart disease, cancer and depression. We could also take a forensic DNA sample and predict the person’s height, build, skin tone and facial features. The statistical methods to achieve this are still under development. In this project you will work on new methods to combine information across thousands of DNA markers to form better genetic predictions. You will apply these methods to the latest massive datasets, including the UK Biobank and US Precision Medicine Initiative, to demonstrate the future potential of genetic prediction. You will also study the different applications of genetic prediction, from mammographic screening to forensic profiling, to develop customised approaches for each case.
