About the Project

Location: Penryn Campus, University of Exeter, Cornwall TR10 9FE

Project Description:
The College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences at University of Exeter invites applications for a PhD position in the area of remote sensing, automation and machine control.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing research related to integrating new sensor technologies and 3D mapping processes to aid automation and intelligent mining.

The PhD student will work closely with other members of the research team at Camborne School of Mines of University of Exeter (Penryn Campus, Cornwall).

Main tasks will include:
• Development of machine localisation and mapping techniques using multiple remote sensing technologies (LiDAR, photogrammetry and radar).
• Testing the applicability and accuracy of these techniques for automated mining applications both on surface and underground.
• Designing intelligent mining solutions using emerging sensor and data visualisation technologies (such as virtual, augmented, mixed reality and serious gaming environments).

This project will investigate, validate and test new sensors, systems and workflows and their applicability for automated and intelligent mining. This project will also undertake research associated with remote characterisation and identification of hazards.

For more information about the project and informal enquiries, please contact the primary supervisors, Dr. Matthew Eyre and Professor Kip Jeffrey.

Academic Entry Requirements:
You should have or expect to achieve at least a 2:1 Honours degree, or equivalent, in Mining/Civil/Electrical Engineering or related discipline. Experience in remote sensing techniques and machine control, preferably with field experience desirable.

If English is not your first language you will need to meet the English language requirements and provide proof of proficiency. For more information and a list of acceptable alternative tests visit http://www.exeter.ac.uk/postgraduate/apply/english/
