Applications are invited for an Early Stage Researcher position in physics and photonic devices of quantum light emitters produced using a range of novel materials including atomically thin 2D materials (transition metal dichalcogenides, boron nitride) as well as III-V semiconductor quantum dots grown by recently developed droplet epitaxy. This position is a part of a multi-national Horizon-2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie ITN ‘4PHOTON’. The successful individual will be employed as a salaried researcher at the University of Sheffield, and will study for a PhD in the physics of quantum light emitters in novel condensed matter systems.
In this project we will target development of novel single-photon emitters with a goal to integrate them to photonic structures, and in a longer-term use them for ‘on-chip’ quantum information processing. We will aim to study several materials with a goal of selecting the system with the best performance. An important task will be design and fabrication of novel structures comprising single atomic layers of 2D semiconductors (such as transition metal dichalcogenides or boron nitride) to enable deterministic positioning and control of single-photon emitters (SPEs). Another important task will be coupling of both III-V and 2D SPEs to photonic devices to enable efficient single-photon collection or routing on a chip. This will lead to quantum optics experiments ‘on a chip’, an attractive route to quantum information processing.
The successful candidate will join the 2D Materials group of 5 PhD students and 2 postdocs (also part of a large inorganic semiconductors group of about 50 researchers), and will be trained to use a modern semiconductor clean room and the state-of-the-art optical laboratories in Sheffield. We enjoy a range of collaborations through many national and international projects. The new student will be fully involved in these activities as well as in the wide programme of training and exchanges within 4PHOTON ITN.
The researcher’s salary rates and additional mobility, career and travel allowances will be as per the Marie Skłodowska-Curie programme, which provides a very attractive reward package including relocation funds.
Applicants for this post are expected to have completed a Masters in solid state physics or a related discipline. Experience in optical spectroscopy and use of a clean room is also desirable.
