About the Project

A multidisciplinary PhD research position is available to investigate novel methods for efficiently simulating 5G cellular mobile communication systems. While existing and well-known system level simulators provide a reasonable coverage of different simulation features (for instance, traffic generation models, user mobility models, radio resource management algorithms and concurrent user transmissions to mention a few), they inherently rely on very simple computation models and algorithms and hence seldom make use of modern computing architectures or features therein. As such, the simulation times or model estimation times of existing simulators are unacceptably too long to be of practical utility.

The scope of this PhD is to develop novel and efficient simulation algorithms for 5G cellular networks (and beyond), leveraging the features of modern architectures like GPUs, many-core processors and clusters of them. Candidates are expected to have a strong background on cellular networks, parallel programming models and should have decent exposure to novel architectures. Previous background on developing parallel applications or simulators is an added advantage.

Furthermore, this project counts the interest of relevant companies and may lead to collaborations with some of the Department’s industrial contacts (e.g., Huawei, Bell Labs, and Hartree Centre).

Enquiries should be addressed to both Dr Miguel López-Benítez ([Email Address Removed]) and Dr Jeyan Thiyagalingam ([Email Address Removed]).

Applications should be sent to Dr Miguel López-Benítez ([Email Address Removed]) and Dr Jeyan Thiyagalingam ([Email Address Removed]) and should include a copy of curriculum vitae, academic transcripts, statement of research interests, and list of publications (if applicable).

Funding Notes

Applications from UK, EU and overseas/international self-funded students are welcome. For prospective candidates whose home country funds PhD scholarships to conduct research abroad, support to prepare an application could be provided.
