Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)
About the Project
A fully funded PhD position is available at School of Life Sciences (Arundel Building, Pharmaceutics Research Lab) jointly with Engineering Department (Richmond building), University of Sussex for 3 years starting in September 2017. Scholarship covers maintenance (living) costs at RC guideline rates and tuition fees at the UK/European fee level, and international (non-European Union) candidates would have to pay the difference between home and international fees with their own funding.
Background: Three dimensional (3D) printing is referred to a fabrication method involving materials, such as polymers or metal and are deposited one onto another in layers to produce a three dimensional object (medical implants or pills). 3D printing has been proved viable in several medical applications including the manufacture of eyeglasses, custom prosthetic devices, tablets and dental implants. There has not been any techniques or products that can integrate a sensing system in the medical implants manufactured via 3D printing. The main aim is to develop a novel biocompatible medical implant via a 3D printing technology. Furthermore the possibility to insert a coiled up flexible electronic sensing device into the printed implants will be evaluated. The required flexible electronics will be fabricated on a polymeric membrane using thin-film technology. Therefore the feasibility to fabricate smart implants with the ability to send information about the patients’ sugar level in real time will be explored. These implants will be able to transmit the information regarding the sugar level from the implant to a hand held smart device (e.g. a smart phone) to produce a data set. This will eliminate the need for piercing the skin and testing the blood sample every day and will become more patient compliant.

Funding Notes
You will have a 1st or 2:1 UK Bachelor’s, or a MSc degree, or equivalent, in a relevant subject such as pharmaceutical sciences, chemical engineering, pharmaceutical technology, materials science and engineering or similar.
Previous work experience in the emerging subject areas of additive manufacturing (3D printing) will be an advantage.
Since the scholarship only covers fees at the UK/EU rate, overseas applicants are requested to state in their application how they propose to cover the difference between the UK/EU rate and overseas fees (for details see http://www.sussex.ac.uk/study/pg/fees-and-scholarships/postgraduate-fees).
