Funded PhD Project (UK Students Only)
About the Project
A three-year MRC CASE DPhil studentship, beginning in October 20017 and funded by the Medical Research Council, is available as a collaborative project jointly held by the Cardiac Metabolism Research Group (CMRG) in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics and PulseTeq Limited (http://pulseteq.com). The studentship will be jointly supervised by Prof. Damian Tyler, Dr Lowri Cochlin and Dr Chris Randall.
Summary of Project
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has proved to be a valuable tool for the measurement of biological structure and function. However, the application of MRI, and the associated technique of MR Spectroscopy (MRS), for metabolic imaging are inherently limited by relatively low sensitivity. This project is based on innovative technology, known as Hyperpolarized Magnetic Resonance that can improve MRI/MRS sensitivity by up to 10,000-fold.
The aims of this project will be to develop and construct novel radio-frequency (RF) coils for the sensitive acquisition of hyperpolarized magnetic resonance signals which can be used in the study of cardiac metabolism in healthy and diseased hearts.
Candidates must have a good degree in physics/electrical engineering (or a related discipline) and an interest in broadening their skill base to a new and novel imaging technology. Experience in magnetic resonance spectroscopy and imaging would be an advantage although not necessary. Applicants should have good communication skills, be able to work independently, and the ability to work as part of a team
