About the Project
TEAGASC PHD WALSH FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Background
White clover is a forage crop commonly grown in mixtures with perennial ryegrass. Teagasc research has demonstrated that incorporating white clover in to grazing swards provides additional nitrogen for herbage production and provides higher quality forage leading to increase milk yields relative to grass-only swards, contributing to the economic and environmental sustainability of pastoral based production systems. Teagasc runs a white clover breeding programme charged with developing improved varieties to support Irish agriculture. Genomic selection is a form of marker-assisted selection where molecular markers covering the entire genome are used to generate breeding values for individual plants. The PhD student will evaluate the potential of genomic selection in the white clover breeding programme.
Requirements
Applicants should have a good primary degree (First or Second Class Honours) or M.Sc. in an appropriate discipline (Plant breeding, Statistics, Bioinformatics, and Quantitative Genetics etc.) and have a good mathematical literacy. Applications from candidates with a background in plant breeding are particularly encouraged. The successful candidate should be highly self-motivated. The successful candidate will be based at Oak Park, Ireland but must be willing to travel on occasion to Aberystwyth University, UK.
Award
The PhD Fellowship is a joint research project between Teagasc, Oak Park, Ireland, and Aberystwyth University, UK. The student will be registered at Aberytwyth University, working under the supervision of Dr. Leif Skot in association with Teagasc supervisors (Dr. Dan Milbourne, Dr. Stephen Byrne, and Dr. Patrick Conaghan).
Funding Notes
The fellowship provides a stipend of Euro22,000 for 4 years. University fees are paid by the student from the stipend.
