About the Project

PhD Studentship: Centre for Advanced and Interdisciplinary Radiation Research (CAIRR) at Queen’s University Belfast

Title:
A comprehensive view of water-radiolytic reactions

We have developed cutting-edge techniques that can be used to probe the chemistry that takes place following irradiation. We are using these techniques to open up a new window on the means by which radiation acts to kill cancer cells with the hope of eventually giving greater efficacy to radiotherapy. Using ultrafast laser technology we can measure ultrafast (sub pico-second) radiolytic processes in a relative manner. Using conventional radiation sources we have developed complimentary techniques to measure slow (millisecond) radiolytic processes in an absolute fashion. These latter measurements provide absolute G-values thereby giving a stringent test of theory. In this project we will combine the two technologies and additionally add measurement techniques to follow the chemical evolution of products from pico-seconds all the way through to millisecond timescales.

This will involve developing a microfluidic sample delivery system compatible with the target environments of TARANIS, Harwell laser and LCLS. Once characterized using conventional radiation sources, the new delivery system will be used to study both the interactions taking place in pure water, water with various dissolved gasses and water containing dose-modifying agents such as nanoparticles with the resultant data providing new insights into both fundamental radiation processes and the design of future radiotherapeutics.
