Competition Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)
About the Project
Reference RS/16/12
Applications are invited for a full time PhD (via MPhil) studentship in the School of Engineering in the Centre for Energy and Power Management. The studentship is tenable for up to 3 years full-time [subject to satisfactory progress] and will cover the cost of tuition fees at UK/EU rates. International applicants may apply but will be required to pay the difference in tuition fees..It is expected the successful applicant will commence 1 April 2017.
Project Description
“Future buildings/dwellings are anticipated to incorporate microgeneration such as photovoltaics, solar collectors, heat pumps and micro CHP, as well as energy storage. Detailed energy consumption profiles for buildings and groups of buildings with microgeneration mix is an important prerequisite for the analysis and implementation of emerging energy technologies and low-carbon strategies such as demand site management. Simulation of such profiles requires detailed modelling of the occupancy patterns and usage profiles of the appliances and energy systems. This is typically performed using (i) autoregressive techniques, (ii) stochastic models based, mainly, on Markov chain method and (iii) pattern recognition models such as artificial neural networks.
This work will be aiming to apply machine learning tools in the simulation of occupancy patterns and usage profiles. Such techniques can represent complex dependencies and interactions; therefore, this approach is expected to allow for development of higher quality output with relatively uncomplicated model structure. These advanced generated profiles will be then used for the detailed simulation of buildings and their systems with the aim to produce thermal models which can potentially interact with existing network models. The results will be validated using published data from previous research”.
Candidates should have (or expect to hold) a 2:1 degree or above either in Physics/Engineering/Science with strong Mathematical background or in Maths, or equivalent.
International applicants require an English Language level of UKVI IELTs 6.5 (no sub-score below 6.0) or equivalent qualification.
