Off-Shore Wind Supply Chain Network Design with risk mitigation

To celebrate the University's research successes, the University of Hull is offering a full-time UK/EU PhD Scholarship or International Fees Bursary for candidates applying for the following project.

Project Description
As one of the fastest growing sectors and one of the most relevant fields for the improvement of sustainability, the offshore wind industry needs an efficient, effective and risk resilient design of global supply chain networks across the main areas of supply of parts and components, production, assembly and installation of wind turbines in wind farms. In a context of massive connectivity, threats concern not only the physical dimension of supply chains, but also the exchange and transmission of data, information and energy. Suitable risk management frameworks, modelling and simulation tools need to be devised and developed for mitigating, and reducing the potential impact of such sources of risks, with the twin aims of enhancing in a proactive way the sustainability of off-shore wind supply chains, and reducing the cost of these supply chains.

The ideal candidate for this PhD Project will have a solid background in supply chain network design and strong modelling, analytical and mathematical skills. We encourage candidates who have an aspiration and ability to understand the special features of the offshore wind supply chain, and merge them with innovative approaches to the modelling and design of risk resilient supply chain networks. A multidisciplinary mindset will help the ideal candidate to advance knowledge in this unexplored and promising area from a variety of perspectives.

In order to demonstrate their suitability to this project, candidates will need to submit a research proposal along with their application; a 1,500 word document setting the scene to the problem under investigation, and describing the approach, methods and ideas basing the development of their project, and a statement of its value proposition.

Full-time UK/EU PhD Scholarships will include fees at the ‘home/EU' student rate and maintenance (£14,553 in 2017/18) for three years, depending on satisfactory progress.

Full-time International Fee PhD Studentships will include full fees at the International student rate for three years, dependent on satisfactory progress.

PhD students at the University of Hull follow modules for research and transferable skills development and gain a Masters level Certificate, or Diploma, in Research Training, in addition to their research degree.
