About the Project

The aim of the project is to improve catalytic systems using the knowledge obtained through modern mechanistic methodologies. These methodologies include new analysis of kinetic profiling obtained by NMR and in-situ FT-IR. The student will receive excellent training in chemical kinetics and reaction monitoring techniques. At the end of the PhD, the student will possess a set of unique and useful skills highly valuable both in academia and in industry.

Manchester is an exciting and vibrant city with a lively, contemporary music and club scene, a thriving theatre, opera and dance scene, and an animated nightlife. The city has award-winning museums, galleries and theatres and it is also well known for being a city of sport, with plenty of things to enjoy. The University of Manchester is the largest single-site university in the UK and is part of the prestigious Russell Group. The School of Chemistry is one of the most important Chemistry departments in the UK, with world-class research facilities, including 9 high resolution NMR spectrometers, 1 solid state spectrometer, several powder systems for X-ray crystallography, and a national EPR service. In the Bures group, we have a well-equipped laboratory with our own ReactIR 15 and an amazing music system. We collaborate with a bunch of excellent chemists around the world, industrial partners and equipment manufacturers. This will provide you with a fantastic opportunity to diversify your network; always interesting when planning for the next step after your PhD.


Qualification
Candidates should have a solid organic chemistry background and be enthusiastic in understanding catalytic processes at molecular level. Candidates should hold, or be expected to achieve, a first class or upper second class Master degree in Chemistry.

Funding Notes

The Studentship covers tuition fees and a stipend for 3.5 years (£14,553p.a. in 2017/18). Due to funding restrictions the studentship is open to UK and EU nationals only.
