About the Project

Electrochemical forming is a unique additive manufacturing method which uses electrochemical technologies to manufacture, layer-by-layer, parts of complex geometry. Electrochemical forming finds applications in aerospace, high-precision ink-jet printers, medical technology and microscale technologies. Despite its wide-ranging uses, current manufacturing methods remain traditional and rely on experience rather than a deep scientific understanding, which is required for an “Industry 4.0” era.

This project will explore novel methodologies which can transform this technology for Industry 4.0 readiness. The project will involve the development of a pilot scale reactor with relevant analytical techniques and instrumentation that will enable the interrogation and optimisation of the process. Both scientific and statistical techniques will be employed to interpret process data. The effort of the work will not only enable an additive sustainable process to be optimised through deeper knowledge, but also enable it to reach Industry 4.0 readiness level.

In addition to undertaking cutting edge research, students are also registered for the Postgraduate Certificate in Researcher Development (PGCert), which is a supplementary qualification that develops a student’s skills, networks and career prospects.

Funding Notes

This scholarship will fund the fees and stipend for a Home (Scottish) or Rest of the UK (RUK) student for 3.5 years.

Students applying should have (or expect to achieve) a high 2.1 undergraduate degree in a relevant Engineering/science discipline, and must be highly motivated to undertake multidisciplinary research.
