Competition Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)
About the Project
The University of the West of Scotland (UWS) is seeking to attract PhD candidates of outstanding ability and commitment to join its vibrant and growing programme of internationally excellent research. Successful applicants will benefit from our intellectually stimulating and inclusive research environment and from enhanced career development support and professional skills training.
Choosing a career is one of the most important decisions a young person makes and the Youth@Work game aims to support young people between the ages of 13-19 years in career planning and decision making. The game collects information about players’ subject preferences, leisure interests, career values, personal characteristics and skills as they play the game and this information is used to suggest appropriate career categories to the players.
It is proposed that the Affective and Human Computing for Smart Environment (AHCSE) equipment would help to assess players’ emotions as they view and select their responses to these characteristics. This would provide an additional objective measure of player preferences and interests that could be used to help validate the game scoring mechanism. Ultimately this could be used to provide better tailored guidance about careers for young people.
This project is a joint venture of three fields namely; signal processing, psychology and health and that’s why three academics from three different fields are in the supervisory team to complete the PhD in timely manner. The final outcome will be real time concept demonstrator to show the university research standing and help to get external funding.
