About the Project

This project aims to define and validate in practice a suite of development and implementation processes and tools to support the creation of aids for shared decision-making. There is strong evidence that shared decision aids improve patient practitioner communication and increase people’s ability to make informed, values-based decisions. The benefits of shared decision-making are recognized within national healthcare strategies as supporting self-management, promoting person-centred care, and preventing over-use of medical interventions.

This project will:

• Identify existing good practice in development of shared decision aids from the international literature and by surveying Scottish health and social care organisations.
• Use insertion of grommets for otitis media as a test case to:
• Design a systematic development process which finds out what options patients and practitioners need to discuss, and use validated evidence on risks and benefits.
• Define criteria for quality assurance of decision aid content and delivery.
• Create an evidence-based implementation model to embed use of shared decision aids in practice.
• Define a framework for evaluating impact on quality of decisions and outcomes for patients and professionals.

This methodology, and the shared decision aid for grommets, will initially be designed and evaluated among general practices and ENT departments in NHS Tayside. The ultimate aim will be to scale-up the methodology for wider use in Scotland’s health and social care.

This project provides the opportunity to explore several themes central to the changing models of care:

• Strengthening the patient-professional relationship
• Patient empowerment through knowledge and understanding
• Transitioning decision-making models from paternalistic to participative
• Models of human motivation and behavior change
• The role of different types of knowledge in healthcare decisions – including research, practice, and lived experience.
