Dr D McGrouther  No more applications being accepted  Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

About the Project

Applications are invited for a fully-funded PhD studentship in the University of Glasgow Materials and Condensed Matter Physics group. Related to our installation of a new £1.3M state-of-the-art Xe Plasma FIB-SEM, we have a project available to develop aspects of the instrument’s unique capabilities, direct writing of magnetic nanostructures and preparation of ultrathin, damage free specimens. The fundamental properties and behaviour of resulting specimens will be investigated using our £2.4M aberration corrected MagTEM instrument. These investigations will look to establish key structure property relations and to investigate dynamic behaviour.

Joining the MCMP group, your work will contribute to our overall body of activities which aim to understand fundamental properties and processes in functional materials and nanostructures, and to optimise novel advanced materials for energy, electronic and security applications. We have excellent industrial links and a strongly international outlook. Our portfolio of funded research spans thermoelectric energy generation, chiral magnetic systems and artificial spin ice, novel imaging modes in scanning transmission electron microscopy using fast pixelated detectors and ferroelectric materials and heterostructures.

With an internationally-leading research portfolio, an enviable graduate training programme and a long-standing reputation for excellence, the University of Glasgow provides a vibrant environment for physics PhD studies. Research students have access to state-of-the-art local facilities and many participate in multi-national, large-scale collaborative projects. The postgraduate experience is enhanced by the Scottish Universities Physics Alliance (SUPA), which blends the best resources and expertise from many institutions to provide a training experience with a competitive advantage.

Please note that funding is available only for applicants who are UK or EU nationals.
