About the Project

Metal-ceramic composites offer many advantages over monolithic metals and their alloys such as high specific stiffness and strength, better creep, fatigue and wear resistance, and good thermal properties. Recent advances in material science have made it possible to produce metal-ceramic composites with high ceramic content cost-effectively making them attractive to a number of potential applications in the automotive, aerospace and biomedical engineering. The aim of the project is develop and verify mathematical models that can predict mechanical properties of novel metal-ceramic composites with compositional gradients in the microstructure and investigate their mechanical behaviour under a range of loading conditions. The project will involve theoretical modelling using a combination of analytical and computational means.

The successful candidate should have, or expect to have, an Honours Degree at 2.1 or above (or equivalent) in applied mathematics, solid mechanics, or materials engineering.

Good knowledge of composite materials and solid mechanics, and strong modelling skills using Matlab and ABAQUS would be a significant advantage.

Funding Notes

This project is for self-funded students only. There is no funding attached to this project. The successful applicant will be expected to pay Tuition Fees and living expenses, from their own resources, for the duration of study.
