Prof R Neilson, Dr M Kartal  Applications accepted all year round  Self-Funded PhD Students Only

About the Project

Recently a range of materials produced by compressing a knitted metal mesh into a shaped die has become available. The use of a die allows complex shapes to be manufactured and the density of the final product to be controlled. While some of the original applications were for filter systems, the material also has potential as a structural material in shock or vibration applications as a damping/elastic element. To allow its use the material needs to be characterised for a range of densities.

This project will investigate the static and dynamic mechanical properties of a range of different densities of knitted wire mesh samples to provide some design guidelines for future use. As well as the load/deflection characteristics, X-ray micro computed tomography will be used before and after testing to provide images of the mesh and how it is has remodelled as a result of the loading.

The successful candidate should have, or expect to have, an Honours Degree at 2.1 or above (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or Materials Science.

Essential Background: A good knowledge of strength of materials and stress analysis.

Knowledge of: Materials testing, material modelling, stress analysis

Funding Notes

This project is for self-funded students only. There is no funding attached to this project. The successful applicant will be expected to pay Tuition Fees and living expenses, from their own resources, for the duration of study.
