Prof M Clark, Prof G Tanner, Dr S Sharples  Applications accepted all year round  Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

About the Project

Stochastic media such as texture, polycrystaline materials covers a wide range of extremely important engineering materials and the stochastic nature of the materials and the information required to characterise them requires a careful approach to modelling and analysis. While it is possible to completely model these materials with inifinite computing resources pressing practical problems currently remain outside of the capabilities for numerical techniques.

In this project we will combine breakthrough experimental techniques with breakthrough numerical modelling techniques (GPU based Pogo FEM), hybrid FEM / diffuse field and stochastic propagation techniques to develop models to un-pick the effects of geometry from the effects of texture in engineering materials and so provide a sound basis for the measurement of the interior mechanical properties of advanced aerospace materials and components.

Summary: UK/EU students - Tuition Fees paid, and full Stipend at the RCUK rate, which is £14,296 per annum for 2016/17. There will also be some support available for you to claim for limited conference attendance. The scholarship length will be 3 or 3.5, depending on the qualifications and training needs of the successful applicant.
