About the Project

Stockholm Business School welcomes applications for admission to the PhD program in Business Administration, Finance, starting September 1, 2017. Ref.no. SU FV0579-17. The closing date is March 31, 2017.

Stockholm Business School (SBS) is one of the biggest departments within the Faculty of Social Sciences at Stockholm University with about 180 employees and 3,500 students. SBS carries out innovative social science research about markets, organizations and the people who operate in them. Our research contributes significantly to scholarly knowledge, as well as to business, government and society. Many of our faculty members are internationally recognized for their work in the fields of accounting, finance, management and marketing.

Within finance, research at SBS is particularly strong in Financial Market Microstructure (FMM). FMM is recognized as a potentially leading research area at Stockholm University, one of three such areas at SBS. We aim to consolidate the FMM group at SBS as the nationleading research entity in this field. Through an ongoing strategic international recruitment process, the FMM group now constitutes Sweden's largest concentration of researchers and doctoral students in the area.
Qualification requirementsThe applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits (of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle), or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere. In addition, the applicant must have completed at least 90 credits in business administration or equivalent, with a finance major, including a master’s thesis of at least 15 credits.
Project descriptionThe doctoral student will be part of a research project that investigates the effects of fragmentation and fast trading in financial markets from the perspective of long-term investors. The doctoral student may contribute to the project by, for example, developing suitable econometric techniques and analyzing large financial databases in order to improve the understanding of trading strategies and financial market structure.

1) the candidates’ documented knowledge in a relevant field of research,
2) written and oral proficiency in English,
3) the capacity for analytical, creative and critical thinking, the ability to collaborate, and independence.
The assessment of candidates focuses on previous experience and grades, the quality of the degree project, references, relevant experience, and the candidates’ written motivation for seeking the position. Short-listed candidates will be invited for an interview.
