Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)
About the Project
Start Date: 1 October 2017
Stipend: RCUK stipend
The studentship will centre on the role of unpaid caring for people with long-term, life-limiting conditions. There is scope for the final details of the research to be negotiated between the successful candidate and the research supervisors but key emphasis will be on developing, testing and evaluating a supportive carer’s intervention.
This PhD studentship will be on a topic related to family carers of people with long term conditions who are approaching the end of life. Research questions will address how to improve quality of life for carers and enable them to continue in their caring role. The studentship will consider the impact of wider support provided to carers by third sector organisations alongside a health and social care intervention to help carers to prepare to look after people at home.
Three project phases are envisaged:
Phase 1: Scoping the literature, systematic review and scoping practice in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde
Phase 2: Developing the intervention
Phase 3: Feasibility testing of the impact of the intervention from carers and stakeholder viewpoint one proposed outcome- avoidable admissions
The PhD will be interdisciplinary, integrating key ideas and approaches from a number of disciplines.
Professor Johnston holds the post of Florence Nightingale Foundation Chair in Clinical Nursing Practice Research in the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing. This a joint clinical academic post between the University of Glasgow and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. I have a clinical, educational and research background in palliative care. My clinical remit in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde relates to palliative and end of life care, with some strategic responsibility for developing capacity in nursing research, evidence based practice and nurse clinical academics.
My post doctoral research has centred on self-care and advanced cancer, telehealth and palliative care symptom management in palliative care and laterally developing and testing interventions related to dignity and end of life care. I tweet as @BridgetJohnst http://www.gla.ac.uk/schools/medicine/staff/bridgetjohnston/
The supervisory team have secured funding to start important preparatory work with patients, carers and the public to determine the key issues for carers and to co-design the intervention. A Patient and Public Involvement Advisory Panel will remain closely involved throughout the duration of the research project and play a central role in giving feedback on the carer’s intervention.
