About the Project

Ricardo and the University of Brighton have been collaborating for over 25 years, in particular through the universities Engineering Doctorate programme. This project aims to take a whole system approach to optimising the use of energy and material resources in the water industry. Using real world case studies, you will initially investigate the energy and material flows in the distribution of drinking water and processing of waste. This will include investigating the system design and operating regime from a resource utilisation and cost perspective. By considering the complete energy system, you will identify areas of waste and opportunities to integrate processes to reduce resource consumption. This could include novel methods of machine selection, new operating strategies considering the wider system, conversion of waste to power and novel system design. From the review, you will select a number of areas for detailed investigation. Established modelling tools will be used, with new sub models and linking routines developed as part of the project. You should have a strong grasp of thermal – fluid processes and a flair for system level thinking of complex processes.
