Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)
About the Project
This PhD project is part of our five-year GREAT FOUNDATIONS initiative (https://greatfoundations.org.uk/). This work is a collaborative programme between the Universities of Brighton and Salford. This PhD studentship will require the successful candidate to design, conduct and manage high quality biomechanical research which will deliver advances with understanding of the development and function of infant’s and children’s feet. This is a multi disciplinary project and would suit candidates with an appropriate allied health professional qualification (e.g. podiatry and physiotherapy), but also a sports science and/or human movement science qualification.
The PhD will work within the first of these areas of research. Our current research is investigating:
- How foot structures (e.g. foot shape, skin and muscles) develop in infancy and whilst walking matures
- Biomechanics of walking development
- Typical developmental rates
- Methods of studying infant walking and foot development
- Guidelines for children’s footwear design/advice
The PhD will therefore include research in one of more of these areas.
We seek graduates to complement our multi-disciplinary team and data collection techniques, therefore graduates from Allied Health Professionals, Sport Sciences, Human Movement Sciences and Engineering should apply. Strong analytical skills, human movement/gait laboratory experience and an ability to work with infants and children are essential. Candidates will have the opportunity to work across both labs within the project and have good opportunities to build upon pre-existing knowledge of gait and lower limb anatomy.
Upon completion of the PhD the successful candidate will have a wide range of biomechanical knowledge and expertise and have become skilled in the use of a range of data collection and analysis techniques (including plantar pressure and motion capture). They will also have gained knowledge in the area of child development and contributed to several high profile publications and presentations at relevant conferences. They will also have experience of working close to industry and health professional partners.
