About the Project

While in mammals the DNA is predominantly methylated in CpG context, in plants non-CpG methylation (CHG and CHH, where H can be A, C or T) is also present and is important for epigenetic regulation of transcription. Recent work suggests that further subclassification depending on the trinucleotide sequence could better explain the establishment and maintenance mechanism of the non-CpG methylation in plants (Gouil & Baulcombe, 2016; Zabet et al., 2017). Interestingly, in mammals, non-CpG methylation in CAG and CAC trinucleotide subcontext was observed in several tissues, while methylation in other trinucleotide subcontexts were absent (Lister et al., 2013; Schultz et al., 2015). Our project aims to further investigate the particulars of the DNA methylation in trinucleotide subcontexts and identify the mechanisms underlying the differences in methylation levels between them. The PhD project will have a strong computational part, but will also include some wet lab work.
We are seeking a highly motivated student with an honours (upper second class minimum) degree in the biological sciences. Candidates with an MSc or relevant postgraduate experience are particularly encouraged to apply.

Candidates must first apply to the University via the Apply Online link below. You must then complete the Scholarship application via http://www.essex.ac.uk/fees-and-funding/research/scholarships/doctoral-apply.aspx
Please note: International students need to have additional funding to cover the difference in tuition fees which is £11,250.00, evidence will be requested that you have these additional funds.

The University of Essex
In the recent Research Excellence Framework 77% of research at the University of Essex research is 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent' (REF 2014).We offer world-class supervision and training opportunities and our research students work at the heart of an internationally-acknowledged and well-connected research community. In the 2013 Postgraduate Research Experience Survey, 84% of respondents said that they were satisfied with the quality of their research degree. At Essex we win awards for our pioneering student support schemes. We are the most recent winners of the prestigious Times Higher Education award for Outstanding Support for Students.
