About the Project

Concentration of volatile organic components (VOCs) could be 5 to 10 times higher in indoor than outdoor environment. Depending on the VOC type, concentration level and exposure duration they can cause various deleterious health and environmental problems. Consumer products have been identified as the source of different pollutants including VOCs in indoor environments. More than 100 VOCs could be found in consumer products depending on their type. The aim of this project is to characterize the VOC emission from various consumer products to evaluate the effectiveness of different options such as air sprays for VOC reduction. During this project, VOC content of various products will be specified using the current GC/MS facilities. Furthermore, the amount of VOC discharge into the environment using appropriate chambers will be identified. Finally, the realistic VOC emissions from consumer under controlled conditions inside real houses will be measured.
EligibilityCandidates should have a 1st or upper 2nd class honours degree in an area relevant to the subject. Candidates should have an interest in mechanical, chemical, petroleum engineering and/or chemistry. In all cases a Master’s degree or equivalent qualification or other evidence of research skills and experience is preferred but not essential.
