About the Project

Project Ref: PHDEC1723. This research will involve two stages. The first stage of the research will focus on an experimental, numerical and computational investigation of TIG surface alloying of flat and curved metallic substrates with small,>100µm,
selected borides, carbides and nitride particles, with special attention being given to the prediction of surface
roughness, wear and thickness of the alloyed surfaces. The aim of this section of the research project is to
establish benchmark parameters to show that TIG surface alloying will provide superior and more conformal
coatings than those prepared by plasma or thermal spraying. This is an area which has received little previous
attention, as highlighted by a lack of information in the literature. This analysis will help in saving cost, material
and time consumption encountered with the current surface engineering methods like plasma and thermal
spraying. The second stage of the investigation will involve integrating the optimized process with a standard
machining process such as the lathe machine to develop a combined machining and surface alloying process.

Funding Notes

UWS is an inspiring, vibrant place to study with a growing research community; an important aspect of which is its outstanding and committed research students.

Successful candidates will receive an annual stipend (currently £14,553) per annum for three years and payment of tuition fees (current value £4200). Applicants are advised that funding will be considered as part of a competitive round and there is no guarantee that it will be awarded. Successful applicants will be expected to contribute up to 6 hours/week to UWS’ academic related activities.
