Dr M Yaseen  No more applications being accepted  Competition Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

About the Project

The main focus of this interdisciplinary research challenge would be to engineer novel nano-composite biocompatible biomaterials and to test physical, chemical and biological characteristics leading to biomedical applications. The development of composite polymer – nanomaterials would be investigated by cell culture and also their surface interactions with proteins and peptides using spectroscopic ellipsometry, neutron reflectivity and AFM.

As a result of multidisciplinary nature of this research project, applicants with background in chemistry, biochemistry or nanomaterials are welcome to apply. There is also an opportunity for travel to collaborators in Italy and other research institutions in the USA. The successful candidate will be based within a multidisciplinary setting that enables further training in advanced physicochemical characterisation, cell culture and organic synthesis. The flexibility within this research can allow the student to develop the project toward physics, biology or chemistry; however preference for master’s student with experience of polymers, nanomaterial synthesis and/or particularly spectroscopic ellipsometric characterisation.

Applicants should already have or be expected to obtain a minimum strong upper Second Class degree in a relevant discipline. An MSc or cross-disciplinary experience may provide an advantage. Applicants whose first language is not English are normally expected to meet the minimum University requirements (e.g. 6.5 IELTS). Candidates are expected to have an excellent disposition, work on own initiative, attention to detail, withstand a fast learning curve, good communication and enthusiasm.

Funding Notes

UWS is an inspiring, vibrant place to study with a growing research community; an important aspect of which is its outstanding and committed research students.

Successful candidates will receive an annual stipend of £14,553 per annum for three years and payment of tuition fees (current value £4200). Applicants are advised that funding will be considered as part of a competitive round and there is no guarantee that it will be awarded.

References

Studentships are open to Home/EU candidates with a first degree in a relevant discipline. Non-EU students can apply, but will not receive the stipend and will be required to pay fees.

How to apply:

Postgraduate Degree by Research Applications should be completed online at
