About the Project

Project Ref: PHDHN1703. The purpose of the study programme is to ascertain whether small proteins (s100’s: A7, A8 A9) produced in the upper layers of the skin, when the skin is injured, leak into the blood stream. If this is the case then it may be possible to de-tect the presence of these protein with a blood test. The presence of these proteins may indicate whether a patient is likely to have delayed wound healing due to the over expression of a particular subset of genes present in the skin. This set of genes have been cited in the literature as having a detrimental influence on the wound healing cascade.

This aspect of this investigation is the first in an incremental process to evaluate the role of circulating S100 proteins in the development of a biomarker diagnostic tool.
