About the Project

Project Ref: PHDSS1721. Currently there is no overall specific survey of sports participation therefore there is a real need to develop a survey that could be used to develop an overview of the sport landscape. There are a number of other surveys that assess physical activity and the household survey but none of these suitably assess sport participation. It is the intention to collaborate with the Danish Institute of Sport and the Muiler Institute, Netherlands, to ensure that good practice from elsewhere is incorporated and that the design will allow international comparisons. From this the study will draw on evidence to create a taxonomy of benefits - social, economic, health (physical and mental) and general well-being. Examines the incidence of benefit and different ’social returns on investment’. Explores trends in poor health and obesity, societal costs and impact of sport and physical activity. Quantifies benefits in monetary terms applying a cost benefit model of sport to the nation looking beyond direct traditional measures of economic impact (Gross Value Added/ GDP). Models future prospects under different scenarios - including at one end of spectrum ’current trends’; and at other achieving benchmark international standards (e.g. Sweden).
