About the Project

Project Ref: PHDSS1725. Golf as a sport is believed to have started in the 15th century in Scotland. Over the years it has continued to gain popularity and is played by both amateur and professional male and female golfers. Some of the key attributes that are channeled towards improved golf performance stem from biomechanics and sports psychology. Although many coaches have incorporated biomechanical and psychological analytical techniques into their training regimes it still remains unclear what biomechanical and psychological attributes influence successful golf swings and putts.

This planned PhD study will investigate a broad range of biomechanical and psychological measures that can provide some clarity into the underlying mechanisms that underpin a successful golf putt.

- You will be responsible to Dr. U. Chris Ugbolue, Dr. Hayley McEwan and Dr. Stephanie Valentin from the Institute for Clinical Exercise & Health Science who will supervise the project.
- You will be trained to use the Vicon Motion Analysis System, Force Plates, EMG systems and other biomechanics equipment.
- You will be trained to process and analyse data using biomechanical and psychological concepts and techniques.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate who has graduated from the fields of biomedical engineering, sport & exercise sciences, and/or psychology. Applicants with (or be about to obtain) an MSc or a first / upper second class honours degree will be eligible to apply. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate a keen interest in golf and have a strong background in science, psychology and/or engineering research methodologies.
