About the Project

Every day 3500 people die in road accidents worldwide. As a result, many countries have set a target of zero serious accidents by 2050. Despite widespread efforts, road accident rates are still falling significantly short of this figure. Mining large quantities of historical and emerging real-time data from new sources, can help identify trends using advanced statistical methods and techniques through high-performance cloud computing. Simultaneously, recent improvements in traffic simulation software and increasing availability of new modelling methods and techniques, can open up new ways to correlate traffic flows, congestion and accidents to improve road safety.

Funding Notes

UK citizens are eligible for 100% of UK tuition fees paid and annual living expenses of £14,553 (full award).
EU citizens from outside the UK are eligible for fees only (partial award).
The award is available to UK/EU applicants only.

Eligibility Criteria
You must have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent, in Civil Engineering, Mathematics or a related subject. The applicant must have a background in transport, numerical modelling expertise and familiarity with statistical techniques. Programming skills and previous knowledge on statistical software packages such as “R” would be desirable.
