Dr A Cadby  Applications accepted all year round  Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

About the Project

We are looking for a motivated graduate student to undertake a Ph.D. on the development of a novel camera technology for super-resolution microscopy. You would be working in Sheffield’s Bio-Imaging Centre (BICEN). The centre is part of the Imagine: Imaging Life project (http://www.imagine-imaginglife.com), a cross-disciplinary initiative to apply novel microscopy techniques to specific biological problems.

Recently there has been a renaissance in optical microscopy, with the limits placed on optical resolution by diffraction being overcome by several techniques. These major developments in microscopy were recognised with the award of a Nobel prize in 2014. The resolution which achieves the highest resolution, at about 20 nm, is localisation microscopy. We have recently shown that, by using a novel camera architecture, we can improve the localisation precision in localisation microscopy and thus increase the resolution.

In this project, you would be required to help with the development of the camera hardware, the development of analysis software and the collection of proof of principle data. You will also be expected to work closely with our industrial collaborators.

If you have any questions about this project please contact Dr. Cadby at [Email Address Removed].

How to apply:
Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis - applications are assessed on the basis of academic success and qualifications, experience, research background and a clear and well-articulated reason for being considered. For information on applying, please see https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/postgraduate/research/apply/applying. Please apply online through the University of Sheffield website (https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/postgradapplication), putting the department of Physics and Astronomy as the home department and Ashley Cadby as the principle supervisor.

Funding Notes

Award

• Full tuition fees (UK).

• An annual, tax-free maintenance stipend at the standard RCUK rate.

These scholarships fund up to 3.5 years full-time study, subject to satisfactory progress.

Eligibility

• You should have, or expect to achieve, a first or upper second class UK honours degree or equivalent. This should be in a relevant area, physics, applied mathematics, chemistry or similar.
