Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)
About the Project
The School is seeking to recruit a PhD student to contribute to the aims of the overall Inclusive Design project which will examine:
1. the performance of existing provision of accessible facilities within buildings with a focus on dwellings
2. the needs and provisions that would make external, public realm spaces and facilities accessible for all end users, including disabled people.
This research will review the actual performance of design measures aimed at promoting Inclusive Design from the perspective of the end users. It will aim to understand the success and failure of these provisions. It will devise and apply easy to understand measurements of the performance gap between Inclusive Design requirements and the actual outcome in the built environment in order to help optimise provision and identify research based good practice. The knowledge gained using East Village and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London as a, ‘living laboratory’ will form a robust evidence base for the formulation of future inclusive design initiatives.
The studentship is co-funded by Oxford Brookes University (Faculty of Technology, Design and Environment) and University College London (UCL) via the Global Disability Innovation Hub (GDI Hub). Other key contributors will be London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) and David Bonnett Associates.
Requirements:
We are looking to recruit a candidate of the highest quality who is capable of submitting a PhD thesis within 3 years. Candidates are expected to have a good first degree or Masters degree in a related subject. The Studentship holder will be required to complete supplementary research methods training in their first year of study.
