Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)
About the Project
MedImmune and Department of Biochemistry, University of Cambridge
A graduate studentship leading to the award of a PhD is available from 1 September 2017 (or later) to work at MedImmune Cambridge (with Dr. M. Snaith) and at Cambridge University in the Biochemistry Department (with Dr. F. Hollfelder - http://www.bioc.cam.ac.uk/hollfelder). The studentship is part of the EU Marie-Curie network MMBio (http://www.bioc.cam.ac.uk/hollfelder/Research/mmbio) on Nucleic Acid Manipulation for Biological Intervention.
Genome editing is revolutionising our ability to study gene function, as well as treating diseases. Engineered nucleases, able to efficiently target defined DNA loci, are key reagents in genome editing. The objective of this PhD project is to develop strategies to alter and retune the activity of genome editing enzymes such as CRISPR-Cas by mechanistic and structural analysis, and also by directed evolution. Ultimately we want to create new enzyme reagents that facilitate the construction of transgenic models of disease and in gene therapy.
Candidates will be based in Cambridge working at the global research centre of MedImmune/AstraZeneca and in the Biochemistry Department of Cambridge University. Extended secondments in the labs of the academic and industrial network partners (http://www.bioc.cam.ac.uk/hollfelder/Research/mmbio/mmbiofront#partner) are also envisaged. All students take part in a training programme that includes workshops, meetings and courses.
Applications should contain a description of your research interests (e.g. as part of the cover letter) and your detailed CV (with exam marks and all relevant practical experience). Please also include the names and email-addresses of at least two referees, who know you from your courses or laboratory research work. Send your application by email to [Email Address Removed] (quoting reference PH12081).
Closing Date: 22 May 2017. Limit of tenure: Up to 36 months.
Please quote reference PH12081 on your application and in any correspondence about this vacancy.
