Competition Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)
About the Project
Applications are invited for a fully-funded PhD Studentship working on the Acoustics of Future Aircraft. The PhD student will join a world-leading research team based within the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) at the University of Southampton, a member of the Russell Group and ranked in the world’s top 100 Universities. The ISVR was founded in 1963 and is a dedicated Institute for teaching and research in audiology and acoustical engineering. Since 1999 the ISVR has been home to the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre (UTC) in Gas Turbine Noise. The Rolls-Royce UTC supports a large research team committed to research on aircraft noise. Noise is a major environmental impact of civil aviation. Reducing aircraft noise is critical to the growth of air transport and to the future of the UK aircraft industry.
In this project, the research will focus on prediction of noise from future aircraft. The airframes of future aircraft are envisaged to depart from the traditional tube and wing design. For novel airframe concepts, how the overall engine noise signature is predicted to be altered by installation and shielding effects, compared to more conventional aircraft designs, is the key research aim of the project. Theoretical and numerical noise prediction methods will be developed, specifically targeting future aircraft concepts looking forward to 2035 and beyond.
This studentship is funded via a major new EU project on reducing aviation noise. During the EU project, a range of promising novel concepts and prediction methods associated with low noise future aircraft will be investigated. The studentship funding covers tuition fees (UK/EU rate) and a tax-free stipend for three years. Applicants should have a good first degree in mathematics or a relevant engineering subject. Ideally the candidate should have some experience in fluid dynamics, but it is not necessary to have experience in acoustics to apply. It is planned to start the project in 2018, preferably no later than October.
