About the Project

Soil underpins most terrestrial life and a key component in the delivery of its ecosystem services. It is also one of the most complex, highly variable, bio-systems on earth. The significant, current, advances in sensor technology opens up substantial opportunities around more developing effectively monitoring systems of the state of soil, its quality and function. The research in this PhD project will seek to develop the full potential of sensor technology (in-situ, UAV based sensors, satellite or airborne sensors), applied to soil systems and how we can best interpret information from these sensors to help make better decision about how we manage our soils, retain and enhance the ecosystem services from soils which are so beneficial to society.

This Cranfield based project is part of the STARS CDT and benefits from having a CASE partner.

Applicants should hold a minimum of a UK Honours Degree at 2:1 level or equivalent in subjects such as Environmental Science, Engineering, Information Technology, Mathematics or Natural Sciences.

Funding Notes

Fully funded for UK residents*, with fees paid and tax-free stipend of £14,553 p.a. There is also a research training support grant. Usually a studentship is for 3.5 years.

*Full studentships are available to UK and EU candidates who have been ordinarily resident in the UK throughout the 3-year period immediately preceding the date of an award. EU candidates who have not been resident in the UK for the last 3 years are eligible for "tuition fees-only" awards (no maintenance grant). Unfortunately studentships are not available to International students. Further details about eligibility can be found on the STARS website.
