About the Project

3D printing is a versatile additive technique to create complex designs, using a variety of polymers. Application to food systems remain however rare.

In this PhD project, 3D printing of polysaccharides will be studied aiming at creating controlled porous structures. Successful 3D printing relies on mastering the rheology of the polymer being printed and its evolution after printing, in order to maintain the desired shape and allow a successful sintering of the next layer with the layers already printed. This project will consider in particular the interplay between 3d printing conditions (nozzle diameter nozzle and bed temperature, layer thickness, printing speed) and the material rheology in order to identify optimal conditions for a satisfactory 3d printing.

The ideal candidate has a background in physics, mechanical or chemical engineering, and is capable of developing original experiments and a theoretical description of the physical phenomena at stake. A documented previous experience in experimental fluid mechanics or rheology is an asset.

Applications should include evidence of meeting U.Surrey’s “English language requirements for postgraduate applicants” and in particular the IELTS level (6.5 overall with no component lower than 6.0) or equivalent certification.

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis. Applicants should send their CV and covering letter before 16th June to:
