About the Project

The University of Surrey, in collaboration with Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe, is pleased to announce an exciting opportunity to join the Practitioner Doctorate in Sustainability programme. As a researcher on this programme (“Doctoral Practitioner” or “DP”), you will be primarily based with your industrial sponsor (“Partnering Organisation” or “PO”), Sony, for the majority of your time on the programme, which will give you valuable industry experience that you could not otherwise gain from a “traditional” PhD. You will benefit from a personalised programme of skills training and academic modules.

The aim of this project is to investigate the relative environmental impacts and benefits of various strategies and approaches to Circular Economy. There is much discussion within academia, and amongst policy makers, on how to make a transition from an economy mainly based on a linear form extraction of virgin resources to final product disposal at end-of-life, to a circular model where materials, components and products are kept in use. The assumption behind this approach is that it will, due to reduction of raw material use, lead to the reduction in environmental impacts.

Applications are invited from self-motivated and enthusiastic candidates who should have completed an undergraduate or first degree in Natural Sciences or Engineering, a Masters’ degree in a relevant subject area e.g. environmental management and sustainability OR 2 – 3 years’ work experience in a relevant field e.g working within environmental management or working with life cycle thinking.

Funding Notes

The successful candidate will receive a generous stipend of £18,000 per annum throughout this time. Stipends are usually tax-free and DPs will also benefit from an additional £500 p.a. allowance for attendance at conferences etc. In addition to this, full-time tuition fees will be covered at the current Home/EU rate for the duration of the programme (International students will be subject to additional fees).
