About the Project
The mission of the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) is to deploy technology in a safe and environmentally friendly way. Our research, testing, approval and regulation activities are intended to promote safety in engineering and chemistry. As a higher federal authority and departmental research institution of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi), with 1700 employees, we have national and international responsibilities, cooperate with universities and non-university research institutions and support young academics.
BAM’s Division 1.9 “Chemical and Optical Sensing” in Berlin-Adlershof invites applications for a position as
Ph.D. Student (f/m)
having graduated in Chemistry, Materials Sciences or a related Subject
Remuneration is effected according to salary scale 13 TVöD. The appointment is a fixed term contract for 18 months, with the option on additional 18 months with 65 % of standard working hours.
Job Description:
The “Chemical and Optical Sensing” Division develops chemical sensors, microfluidic systems, and optical and mass spectrometric methods for a broad palette of analytes. We combine fundamental and application-oriented knowledge to develop smart detection strategies. Instrument-based detection strategies are developed in tandem with theoretical modelling and imaging characterisation.
Within the framework of a cooperation with the University of Technology Sydney/Australia, the focus of the position is the development of a novel rapid test for the detection of low-volatile contaminants in indoor air. Besides the design, synthesis and characterization of the chemical sensing system, you integrate this component into a simple and mobile device for on-site detection. Your task area includes assay development and testing for use of the respective systems on various models as well as real samples. Your tasks include the documentation, publication and presentation of the results in reports, scientific publications and the presentation at national and international conferences.
Profile Requirements:
You are in possession of a university degree (Master/Diploma) in chemistry, materials sciences or a related subject.
We expect comprehensive knowledge and significant experience in synthetic organic or polymer chemistry. You are knowledgeable in nano-/microparticle chemistry and optical spectroscopy with interest in the application, modification and combination of diverse materials being a plus. Your ability in scientific writing and giving presentations in front of an audience is good. Excellent command of the English language in writing and presentation is a prerequisite. Your function in an interdisciplinary scientific environment requires a high degree of motivation and creativity, capacity for co-operation and team spirit, and high commitment to responsible and autonomous research.
