About the Project

A studentship is available in Modelling and Optimisation to start in September 2017. This is linked to two EPSRC supported grants in Manufacturing using Powder Processes and Advanced Metrology

The Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC) funded eight flagship Future Manufacturing Hubs, two of which are focused on Powder Manufacturing and Manufacturing Metrology. The Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering are part of both of these hubs and will support research through smart digital manufacturing methodologies in collaboration with the Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) who host the Factory of the Future. The technologies and methods will become part of the critical infrastructure for a new generation of digital, high value manufacturing, the so called 4th industrial revolution, or Industry 4.0.

The aim of the PhD is to develop fundamental methods that integrate measurement and data with design and production processes to improve control, quality and productivity for future manufacturing. The first research theme (Project A) is on modelling and optimisation of manufacturing products and processes using large volume metrological data. Models will need to be developed and integrated with metrology data to characterise products and processes at spatial and temporal scales. A second theme (Project B) is on the development of machine learning methods for monitoring and optimisation of additive manufacturing and 3-D printing processes - full details of this project can be found in a separate stand-alone advert.

Funding Notes

Prospective candidates should have a good honours degree (Class 1 or 2:1) in Control Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or other related disciplines. Candidates with a background in one or more the following topics are particularly encouraged to apply: System identification, signal processing, machine learning, control and optimisation, manufacturing.

The Studentship is fully funded for 3 years with a tax-free stipend at the EPSRC rate (£14,553 for 2017/18). Full funding is only available to UK/EU nationals, non-UK/EU nationals can apply but would only receive a partial contribution towards the tuition fees.

To apply please submit a PhD application using our online application system via the Apply link at the following: http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/postgraduate/research/apply/applying

Within the application, please state Professor Visakan Kadirkamanathan as your preferred supervisor. If you wish to apply for Project A only please state the project title as ‘Modelling and Optimisation’. If you wish to apply for Project B only, please state the project title as ‘Data Analytics and Machine Learning ’.

Applicants may wish to be considered for both projects. If so, please state the project title as “Modelling and Optimisation / Data Analytics and Machine Learning”.

Please note that deferral to a later start date for these Studentships is not permitted.
