About the Project

Stopford Energy & Environment

3 Year Industry-led Funded PhD, Ref. No.40

This project will seek to couple fuel cell technology to a novel small-scale microwave induced plasma (MIP) gasification technology to enable the highly efficient generation of heat and power from biomass and waste. The Plasmergy MIP gasification approach enables feedstocks to be thermally converted into a synthetic gas, rich in both hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Whilst gas engines and turbines are candidate technologies for the power generation train, significantly enhanced energy conversion efficiencies can be achieved via coupling with high temperature fuel cells, which allows for better thermal integration. Applicants should have a chemical/mechanical engineering background (or related subject) with laboratory experience.
