About the Project

EDGE (Training network providing cutting-EDGE knowlEDGE on Herpes Virology and Immunology) is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network for early stage researchers (ESRs) funded by the European Commission under the H2020 Programme, the EU framework programme for research and innovation. EDGE will provide a comprehensive and cross-disciplinary structured curriculum for doctoral students in the fields of virology and immunology. Key research aims of EDGE are to improve the basic understanding of the interactions between herpesviruses and host cells and to uncover implications for the clinical outcome of infections as well as development of vaccines. While each ESR will be based in a host institution, there will be extensive interactions between laboratories involved, and all positions involve secondments in other laboratories of the network, which also includes a theoretical training program.

Within the EDGE network, the laboratory of Prof. Dr. Melanie Brinkmann at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Braunschweig, Germany, has one open PhD position. The objectives of the PhD project are the determination of the proviral or antiviral role of cellular proteins induced after human cytomegalovirus infection and the detailed characterisation of the mechanism of action of selected antiviral or proviral proteins.

Requirements:
- Solid background/expertise in cell biology, molecular biology, virology, and immunology
- Experience with biochemical methods and cloning, ideally in imaging and FACS analysis
- Ability to manage large experimental setups
- Ability to work in a team

Funding Notes

The project is funded by the Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions (EU), associated with some eligibility requirements:

1) Mobility rule:
The candidate must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc) in Germany for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to his/her recruitment. Short stays, such as holidays, are not taken into account.

2) Early Stage Researchers (ESR):
The candidate shall, at the time of recruitment by the host organisation, be in the first four years (e.g. after award of Masters degree) of their research careers and without a doctoral degree.
