About the Project
The successful candidate will be investigating the impact of the psychology of groups/teams. More specifically, the successful candidate’s PhD will focus on personality within the context of high performing teams. Typically within sport and exercise psychology both personality and group dynamics have been investigated separately. Given that individuals live within a number of social groupings, the integrated investigation of these strands is timely. A particular emphasis is likely to be placed on the role of leaders’ and followers’ personalities in order to better understand their influences on outcomes such as, team effectiveness. Quantitative and naturalistic study designs, across a number of different types of teams, are expected to be applied.
We are looking for a determined, motivated individual with a strong interest in personality and/or group dynamics who enjoys working with enthusiastic critical thinkers. In addition, the student must be able to work as part of a team but equally be comfortable working independently and be aware of the challenges of conducting research in naturalistic and laboratory settings.
Successful applicants will normally have a Masters degree, or in exceptional cases a First Class Honours Degree, in psychology or a sport, exercise or health-related science subject, the ability to work independently with support from a supervisor, and the enthusiasm to contribute to stimulating research and practice environments.

In addition, a two-page research proposal (excluding Reference sections) regarding personality and teams is also expected and should provide an overview of Introduction, Method, and Data Analysis issues. However, this proposal will not determine the exact nature of the research questions examined in the PhD.
Funding Notes
The studentship covers UK/EU registration fees (currently £4,195 for 2017/18) plus a stipend of £12,000 per annum and £2,000 per annum in return for a contribution to School activities (100 hours per annum).
International applicants will receive the above as a partial scholarship together with an additional International bursary/fee reduction of up to £4,000 but must provide evidence that they are able to fund the additional fees and living expenses to meet UK Visas and Immigration Tier 4 Student Visa requirements.
