About the Project

The University of Liverpool (UoL) and Engage Liverpool are seeking to appoint a suitable experienced and qualified individual to undertake a three year doctoral research programme.

As the world becomes increasingly urbanised, the environmental, social, and economic challenges of cities are becoming more acute. Cities are increasingly turning to nature-based solutions (NBS), wherein innovative interventions incorporating or inspired by nature are used to address societal challenges. NBS have been embedded as a policy priority in Europe, where they are seen as a cost-effective and locally-led way to address climate change, water security, natural disasters, poor public health, provide ecosystem services, and respond comprehensively to a wide range of issues in urban areas.

Liverpool is about to embark on an extensive project to introduce innovative NBS in the city, as one of three leading cities in Europe. This collaborative project will develop a process for re-naturing urban areas using NBS, which will be subsequently tested in cities across the world. This PhD project links into this wider project, taking advantage of this unique opportunity to understand NBS within its wider policy and community context. This PhD project will contribute to developing this process, by exploring factors that influence the successful implementation of NBS and conducting action research with community groups and organisations in the city.

This PhD is one of 20 industry-led collaborative R&D projects from the Low Carbon Eco-Innovatory. The aim of the project is for you to work toward a PhD at the University of Liverpool through delivering ‘real – life’ solutions to industry. The Centre brings together the expertise, resources and global contacts of University of Liverpool, Liverpool John Moore’s University and Lancaster University to create innovative low carbon goods, processes and services developed through collaborative R&D partnerships between local companies in the Liverpool City Region and local universities.

All LCEI PhD projects have been developed by SMEs contacting the University for assistance in R&D where the company does not have internal expertise, resource or facilities to carry out the research. This will give you a strong advantage in entering a competitive jobs market in both the academic and commercial sectors.
