Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)
About the Project
Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality in men worldwide, accounting for 15% of all male cancer deaths. PCa patients exhibit a high heterogeneity both clinically and biologically highly variable clinical behaviour; some have indolent disease whilst in others it is lethal. Although the initial response to androgen deprivation therapy is almost universal, progression to castration resistant state is inevitable and lethal (Ali et al, 2017). There is therefore a significant unmet need for biomarkers and therapeutic options for castration-resistant PCa patients (CRPC).
The successful PhD candidate will be involved in a multidisciplinary project to identify epithelial tumour regulatory networks controlling tumour cell stemness and plasticity, and assess their role in tumour progression. The aim of this PhD student is to functionally characterize the role of those networks on PCa progression combining next-generation sequencing with preclinical mouse models to identify novel therapeutic targets.
The CRUK Manchester Institute is a key part of the Belfast-Manchester Movember Centre of Excellence for Prostate Cancer. These centres, based in Belfast-Manchester and London, bring together groups of scientists and clinicians with different areas of expertise to address the big questions in prostate cancer research as part of a structured research programme.
As well as bringing together expert researchers and clinicians, the Movember Centres of Excellence will also provide a world-class training ground for the scientists of the future, building a legacy of top prostate cancer researchers in the UK, as well as establishing international collaborations for the brightest minds to tackle the most important questions in prostate cancer research – now and into the future.
Applications are invited from exceptionally high calibre students, graduates or final year undergraduates who have, or are expected to obtain a first or upper second class honours degree and who are highly committed to pursuing a PhD in cancer research.
Studentships are fully funded for 4 years commencing January 2018. Cancer Research UK sponsorship includes generous stipend, tuition and bench fees. Students trained within our research groups will matriculate from the University of Manchester.
