About the Project
Person re-identification algorithms try to match cropped pedestrian images between queries and candidates. For real-world scenarios, however, the annotated bounding boxes are not available and the target person needs to be found from the whole images. Recently, one end-to-end deep learning frameworks was proposed to jointly detect and re-identify persons. This framework learns features using softmax loss function with the identification signal. However, learning features with the softmax loss function manages to maximize the intra-person variation, but it fails to minimize intra-person variations, which compromise the final person search performance. To tackle this problem, in this project we going to investigate appropriate feature representation for the person search task. Several loss functions, such as the contrastive, triplet and center loss functions have been proved to be effective for intra-class compactness. In this project, these loss functions together with the softmax loss functions will be investigated to generate suitable feature representation for the person search task.

Funding Notes
The PhD studentship is available for three years subject to satisfactory progress by the student. The award covers tuition fees for three years (currently equivalent to RMB 80,000 per annum) and provides a monthly stipend of 3500 RMB as a contribution to living expenses. It also provides up to RMB 16,500 to allow participation at international conferences during the period of the award. It is a condition of the award that holders of XJTLU PhD scholarships carry out 300-500 hours of teaching assistance work per year. The scholarship holder is expected to carry out the major part of his or her research at XJTLU in Suzhou, China. However, he or she is eligible for a research study visit to the University of Liverpool of up to three months, if this is required by the project.
