Gender-Based Violence in documentary translation.

Awareness of Gender Based Violence (thereafter GBV) is growing with increased coverage in the media (social media, news, cinema, television etc.). Accounts of GBV therefore reach us in different ways, for instance we will learn a survivor’s story in a film, novel, autobiography or a documentary.

Dr Bosseaux’s research deals with GBV accounts told in the first person, by survivors, in documentaries. This is because her research focuses on listening to the voices of women who have suffered abuse, to see how their voices are translated in other languages, in subtitled or voice-over versions and ascertain what role translation plays in this context.

Her research aims at reflecting on the role of translation and translators of personal accounts or testimonies, and then investigating how translation mediates the voices of survivors.

Dr Bosseaux works on documentaries translated from English into French and vice versa. She is interested in supervising PhD students who will also work on documentaries but with other language pairs particularly Spanish-English and Arabic English.
