About the Project
The transformer research group at the University of Manchester is offering a PhD position on condition monitoring and asset management of transformer insulation system. Academically excellent MSc graduates and extremely gifted BSc graduates are welcome to apply.
This project is part of a transformer research consortium formed by the University of Manchester which will focus on fundamental understanding of transformer insulation systems’ ageing, degradation and failure mechanisms, thermal modelling, condition assessment and asset management. that consists of 10 national/international companies including transformer manufacturers, oil and paper manufacturers, transmission and distribution network operators and oil test laboratories.
This student will have the opportunity to discuss their research with transformer experts from the sponsoring companies during project meetings held once every three months. In addition, the student will also have the chance to participate in national and international conferences to present their work to a wider audience.
The transformer research consortium was first established in 2005 by Prof. Zhongdong Wang, and was sponsored by UK transmission and distribution network operators, equipment/material manufacturers, and oil analysis service providers. Phase 1 (2005-2008) and Phase 2 (2008-2012) of the consortium focused on the topic of “Applications of Alternative Oils in Large Power Transformers”. The recently completed Phase 3 (2012-2017) had a research focus in line with power system ageing infrastructure and asset management.
Funding Notes
Funding covers tuition fees and an annual maintenance payment.
