Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)
About the Project
A team of students, technicians, and post-doctoral fellows is being assembled to work with five toxicology professors, the local regulator, consulting company, and site owner, to develop innovative approaches to assess the human health chemical risk associated with a complex operating site that contains a complex, unresolved mixture in groundwater and soil. The students and fellows will work at the University of Saskatchewan Toxicology Group (https://www.usask.ca/toxicology/) - one of the largest groups of its kind in North America.
This PhD project will use mammalian cell lines and in vitro bioassays to assess the systemic toxicity of extracts from soil and water samples taken from the operating site. Cell lines will represent main target organs of metabolism (liver), uptake (intestine), and excretion (kidney). Each cell line will be used to evaluate non-specific mode of toxic action (e.g., cytotoxicity) of individual samples/fractions. This will allow us to generate EC50s and conduct exposures to sub-lethal concentrations and evaluate markers of inflammation, oxidative injury, metabolism/detoxification and apoptosis. Candidates should have a strong background in molecular/cell biology and toxicology, as well as expertise in cell culture techniques. The project will involve the candidate working closely with three other PhD students who are working on fish and murine models of toxic action for this complex mixture. In addition, the project involves this candidate working closely with practicing risk assessors and a research associate well versed in analytical toxicology.
Interested candidates should contact Dr. Natacha Hogan ([Email Address Removed]). Applications must include a CV and cover letter outlining your background. Applications will be reviewed as they are submitted.
