Using data to Investigate the links between asthma, asthma treatments, osteoporosis and fracture

This studentship aims to use data from several sources including Hospital Episode Statistics and the Clinical Practice Research Datalink to better understand the links between asthma, asthma treatments, osteoporosis and fracture. This piece of research will establish the real world incidence and prevalence of treatment related side effects in asthma, focusing on osteoporosis and fracture, and including cataracts and diabetes. These data will help the development of specific asthma related bone protection guidelines, guide joint patient/clinician decision making and identify gaps in our knowledge that need addressing in future clinical studies.

The Studentship will use a range of statistical approaches and will be informed by both epidemiological and clinical approaches. This studentship will be supervised jointly by Drs Dominick Shaw and Tricia McKeever with input from Profs Richard Hubbard and Opinder Sahota.

Nottingham is a centre of excellence for Respiratory Medicine with NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) status. This studentship will be based in the BRC and the student will join a vibrant, multidisciplinary team focused on furthering our understanding of asthma. The student will also work with staff from both the Divisions of Respiratory Medicine and Epidemiology. Both Divisions are well regarded internationally, produce highly cited work, and encourage continuing professional development and collaborative effort.

Applications are invited from Home/EU students with a 2.1 UK degree, and preferably an MSc in Epidemiology, Medical Statistics, Public Health (or related field) for a studentship funded by a grant award from the British Medical Association. This is a prestigious award and the student will be expected to represent the University at the end of award showcase.

The successful student will be registered for a PhD; the studentship is available from September for a period of three years and provides a postgraduate stipend of £14,880 in year 1 with increments in line with Research Council Rates.
