Metabolomics of Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer

An exciting PhD studentship opportunity at the National Centre for Mesothelioma Research (NCMR)
3-year PhD studentship commencing in autumn 2017

Applications are invited from candidates with a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in biological or cancer sciences or a related discipline for a 3-year PhD studentship to investigate different aspects of mesothelioma – the underlying mechanisms of the disease, new targets for therapy and new diagnostics.

The focus of the PhD research will be on metabolomics of mesothelioma and lung cancer, with the aim of discovering metabolic weaknesses in the tumours that could be exploited therapeutically, and to relate them to underlying genetic mutations and deletions.

You will be working within the National Centre for Mesothelioma Research (NCMR) http://www.imperial.ac.uk/nhli/research/centres-and-initiatives/national-centre-mesothelioma-research/ at the National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI) and with the Centre’s internal and external collaborators.
NCMR was initiated in 2016 with a direct LIBOR grant from the Chancellor of the Exchequer and with additional funding from the British Lung Foundation and the Asmarley Charitable Trust. The Centre aims to lead discovery research aimed at the underlying mechanisms of mesothelioma and lung cancer, identifying new targets for therapy and new diagnostics for patient stratification.

The student will belong to Imperial’s Graduate School which provides a comprehensive Professional Skills Programme and has received the Times Higher Award for Outstanding Support for Early Career Researchers twice in recent years.
